Kompany was close to be Culé

Summer of 2012, Pep Guardiola left Barcelona to clear his mind and was ready to rest in New York, Tito Vilanova took the charge after an awful season without Champions League nor League title, the first one like that since 2009. Jordi Alba was signed after Abidal left the club and the sport manager was looking for a player who could act both as a central back and as a defensive midfielder.

Andoni Zubizarreta fell in love with Javi Martinez, but the high claims of Athletic tore the negociations apart and Barcelona signed Alex Song from Arsenal in exchange for 19 million euros.

During those dealings, Vincent Kompany was offered to the spanish club, he had just won the Premier League. He was going to finish his contract with Manchester City on the next year and his price was between 12 and 15 million euros, a very good deal for such a good player.

Jacques Liechtenstein, Kompany's manager, traveled to Barcelona (before Barcelona signed Song) for a first contact with the sports manager.

Zubizarreta, chief of the Directive in the initial phase of the signings, came to meet with the agent, but the lack of understanding between the parties was such that the option of Kompany blew up in just 15 MINUTES! and the player ended up renovating Manchester City.
