The amazing story of Jose Holebas

Becoming a footballer is a dream we all had at least once during our lives, stepping into a full stadium with fans chanting your name, scoring goals and lifting cups. But we also know that the path to becoming a successful footballer is full of trials that we must overcome, the path is not the same for everyone and some players deserve our respect just for the sacrifices they did achieving their dream. This is the case of Roma´s left-back, Jose Holebas.





Holebas was born in Germany 30 years ago, his home was multiethnic as the father was Greek and the mother was German with Uruguayan descent. He always wanted to be a footballer and in the firsts stages of his career he played as striker and it was clear that he had the talent to become professional but at the age of 18 an event was ready to change his life. Holebas got his girlfriend pregnant so after she gave birth he decided to get away from football and find a job to be able to provide for his daughter who was named Tanisha.

After three years of work and a lot of insistence from his uncle Alfonso he went back to the sport he loved when he joined FC Viktoria Kahl, a lower league club that at that time played in German´s 6th division. Scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances with the team put him on the spotlight. Holebas persistence was rewarded with a contract at 1860 Munich at the age of 22; curiously he was a fan of Bayern Munich.

His career has taken an ascending curve since then; in 2011 he became a left-back while playing at Olympiacos where he became an idol during the 4 seasons he stay with the Athens giants. Nowadays Jose Holebas is one of the most important players in the Greek national team and was signed by AS Roma for the 2014-15 season.

Curious Fact: Holebas was eligible for German, Greek and Uruguayan national teams. He stated in an interview that his dream was to represent Germany but he is happy to represent Greece because of his father.
